I hold a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s in sustainable building, backed by 17 years of practical, hands-on experience. That order matters. I didn’t start as a blogger who picked up some technical vocabulary — I started as an engineer who got frustrated enough by bad consumer products to start writing about it. I’m based in Germany now, but the products I test, the retailers I buy from, and the readers I’m writing for are American.
What I actually did before this site
Seventeen years on the construction and structural engineering side in the US gave me a specific bias: I don’t trust a product until I understand how it’s built, not just how it’s marketed. When I later went back for a Master of Engineering in Sustainable Building in Germany, the focus was on exactly the stuff most US consumer products ignore — energy performance, material lifecycle, and systems engineered to last rather than engineered to sell.
That combination is the whole premise of this site: American construction experience, filtered through German sustainable-building standards, applied to the everyday products US homeowners actually buy. It’s why I’m pickier than most reviewers about things like standby power draw and material durability — that’s what the German program drilled into me — while still writing for a US audience, US voltage, and US retailers.
How that background actually changes what I review
I’m not going to pretend an engineering degree makes every product review scientific. But it does change what I notice. When I’m looking at a smart thermostat, I’m thinking about how it interacts with insulation and HVAC load, not just whether the app looks nice. When I’m testing a robot vacuum, motor duty-cycle and suction curve matter more to me than the marketing copy on the box.
That’s the lens behind everything in the smart home and gadget guides on this site, and it’s why the kitchen setup breakdown reads more like a systems review than a shopping list.
Why I started SmartDeal Finds
The US market is flooded with products that look great in a 15-second unboxing clip and fail basic durability standards within months. I got tired of watching people — including friends who asked me to “just look at this before I buy it” — get burned by plastic housings that crack under normal thermal cycling, smart plugs with no real surge protection, “energy-saving” gadgets that draw more standby power than they save, and robot vacuum motors rated for far more hours than they actually deliver.
So I started reviewing things the way I’d evaluate a material or system on a job site, not the way most affiliate sites review things.
How I actually review something
A few things I check before anything gets published here, whether it’s a $20 Amazon find or a bigger home organization purchase:
The spec sheet, not the bullet points. Rated wattage against real-world draw, material composition, IP ratings, thermal tolerance. Amazon listing copy is marketing; the spec sheet, when a manufacturer actually publishes one, is closer to the truth.
Standards most US reviewers skip. My sustainable-building training in Germany centered on energy performance and material lifecycle in a way US construction programs generally don’t cover. I bring that lens to standby power draw, insulation-compatible smart heating, and material durability — the stuff that doesn’t show up in a five-star average but shows up on your utility bill and in how long the thing actually lasts.
Cost over the product’s actual lifespan, not just the price tag. A $15 gadget that dies in four months costs more than a $30 one that lasts five years. I try to think about total cost of ownership, not sticker price.
Whether I’d put it in my own home. If a product has a rough safety record, a manufacturer with no real support behind it, or firmware that never gets updated, it doesn’t get recommended here, no matter what the commission looks like.
